House Style Research

A house style is the rules in which a body of work, which is in this case a magazine, is written in.  House style governs the writing conventions of the publications, such as the word choice, numbers, spelling, date formats etc. It sets the rules for when editors and writers use single or double quotes, capital and lowercase letters. italics, and things of that nature. This ensure consistency in a particular publication or a set of publications, giving the magazine an identity which make it easier for the reader to concentrate on the writing, and increases the magazines marketability.

House style varies with the genre of the magazine, to target a specific audience. For example a parenting magazine, like the one seen below may feature a picture of a smiling baby on its front covers with a soft color scheme and fonts close to that of normal handwriting if not standard. to attract parents looking for guidance.

On the other hand a more upbeat genre like a gossip magazine cover -page may have a  photograph of a celebrity as the main image, a bright color scheme, enlarged buzz words (crisis ,exclusive, secrets), and eyebrow raising taglines to draw in fans or just anyone curious on the newest Hollywood scoop. A prime example is shown below:

A Bit About Me

Hi, my name is Kasharma I am currently a senior enrolled in the AICE Media Studies program. I am taking this class to expand my knowledge on the techniques, terminology, and technology in media studies as a head start into my future career as a magazine editor. My hobbies includes writing stories,  sketching, and painting. I also have an interest in all things beauty and hair, so I would love to create a hair or beauty magazine to educating my audience on what I love through one of the most common media outlets.

Reflection on the Syllabus

I have limited knowledge of creating a magazine but I do however have experience in photo editing, formatting creative pieces, and conducting surveys to gauge an audience's preference. These skills all though they are not plenty should put me at a decent starting point for creating my cover page, contents, and my featured article.

I look forward to creating the contents and front page of my magazine because it's an opportunity for my creativity and  ingenuity to flourish. I am also excited to brainstorming ideas about the topic of my magazine and research into different realms of interests. Lastly I am looking forward to learning about the technical elements of media texts, such as camera shots, angel, sound, etc to gain a better understanding of it's significance.

Despite all that I anticipate there are also aspects of this course that makes me wary such as correctly interpreting the significance of these technical elements in a media text. In addition, I am equally as nervous about creating appealing content in my magazine that my audience will enjoy as I am excited about doing it. The written test about media texts and contents is also nerve racking as well because there are a lot of different components I need to learn and know how to apply while being in a virtual environment.

All in all, I hope to gather knowledge on media techniques and terminologies, as well as gaining experience with digital technology to construct media texts.

Introductory

Welcome, my name is Kasharma and this is my first blog post. For my Media Studies foundation portfolio project I have chosen to create a 4 page magazine. This magazine will consist of a cover as well as a contents page and double-page spread. I have chosen to opt out of working in a group and will work individually to create this magazine.

I will utilize my editing, photo shopping, and artistic skills to create the content for my magazine, along with my experience in collecting data to gauge the interest of my audience. Throughout this whole process I hope to be able to understand and explain how media products format and communicate meanings and how to use media study jargon appropriately.

Main Task:
  • I will create a magazine with a front page, contents, and a feature article of two pages. I will solely be responsible for producing my own edition of the magazine with a consistent housing style.
  • All images and texts are my own original products and will be kept to a minimum of 4 images
  • This task is a preliminary exercise to build up my skills with equipment and understanding of conventions.
This blog will be a documentation of the research, planning, and production towards the final product of my magazine, and will include blog posts about such things. It will also include a reflection of its outcome and creation process.
