House Style Research

A house style is the rules in which a body of work, which is in this case a magazine, is written in.  House style governs the writing conventions of the publications, such as the word choice, numbers, spelling, date formats etc. It sets the rules for when editors and writers use single or double quotes, capital and lowercase letters. italics, and things of that nature. This ensure consistency in a particular publication or a set of publications, giving the magazine an identity which make it easier for the reader to concentrate on the writing, and increases the magazines marketability.

House style varies with the genre of the magazine, to target a specific audience. For example a parenting magazine, like the one seen below may feature a picture of a smiling baby on its front covers with a soft color scheme and fonts close to that of normal handwriting if not standard. to attract parents looking for guidance.

On the other hand a more upbeat genre like a gossip magazine cover -page may have a  photograph of a celebrity as the main image, a bright color scheme, enlarged buzz words (crisis ,exclusive, secrets), and eyebrow raising taglines to draw in fans or just anyone curious on the newest Hollywood scoop. A prime example is shown below:
