Magazine Research

                                

     A magazine is a periodical publication containing articles and illustrations, often on a particular subject or aimed at a particular readership (Oxford Dictionaries). Magazines play a pivotal role in delivering a wide range of knowledge on cultures, fashion, occurring news, sports updates, science etc. to an even larger audience who enjoy their monthly or weekly subscription of printed news in the comfort of their homes. Even though due to popular digital media outlets the magazine may be not be as sought after anymore, it can still be accredited for its influence on the world's ever changing fashion, cooking, sports, etc. trends. 

The magazine was created by the German scholar and poet Johann Rist in 1663, who called it 'Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen' which translates to Edifiying Monthly Discussions. The periodicals attracted young intellects all throughout  Europe that enjoy summarizing new books and reading scholarly articles . 




A couple years later in 1672 French writer and playwriter Jean Donneau de Vize published the first entertainment magazine, Le Mercure Galant. It was filled with news, songs, short verses and gossips as opposed to the intellectual content seen before. 





The magazine got its name in 1731 when Edward Cave created The Gentlemen's Magazine, which is the first time these periodicals were called magazines. The word is derived from the Arabic word makhazin, which means storehouse.. The magazine featured a wide-range of topics from poems to political articles.


 In 1842, Herbert Ingram, a British newsagent published the first illustrated magazine, called The Illustrated London News, which incorporated photos and sketches, amongst news articles. 

        

        Andrew Bradford became the first to issue an American magazine in 1741 called American Magazine alongside Benjamin Franklin, sparking a plethora of different genre magazines to flourish in America. A few is listed below:



The National Geographic Magazine was published in 1888 consisting of scientific content and photo. This is magazine is to this this day a popular and trusted source of scientific, geological, and world event news coverage.

In 1954 a magazine geared towards sports fantasist was published, at first only covering wealthy American sports, but soon transitioned into touching on all major sports is still a thriving publication of sports news and illustration. This magazine is called, Sports Illustrated
